Grandma’s Virginity Podcast + Long Winded Process!

Recently i’ve been itching to do portraits. Mainly to test myself with likeness. I also listen to a podcast called The Grandmas Virginity Podcast, which is somewhat of a variety show, nothing to do with Virgin Grandmothers. I see it in my minds eye as a radio Pee-wee's Playhouse for adults...with a lot of farts.

Anyways, they use episode art for each show they release so i decided to take a shot at it. Especially considering how much production goes into each episode and they release it for free.

I started out with some quick little composition doodles. I already had an idea of what i wanted to draw. The creator of the podcast, Justin, who is a cartoonist, and voice actor (Adventure Time, Fish Hooks). The show always ends up in hilarious cul-de-sac’s with really strange characters and ideas.

I knew how i wanted the logo to look, but I had to study the structure of the other two hosts of the show Writer Jackie Buscarino and Writer Ryan Ridley .

The best part about this was imagining and creating what the characters Justin creates would look like. These are “people" who i’ve only heard the voice of. I wanted to do every re-occuring character but i settled on my favourites, including:

-The farting sound effects, They're always funny

-Dr. Wattinski, guest Rob Schrab’s doctor (bassed on Watto)

-Mario, a really pathetic, shell of what he used to be

...and my all time favourite:

-Psychic Abilities. A psychic rapper who stumbles over his words and psychic readings.

The result was this:

I thought Smith Harrison deserved to be included because he’s the only guest to be on every episode so far.

I wish the speech bubbles thing worked better and was more dynamic. Other then that I’m very happy with the result.

The concept originated from the phrase “give’em a taste”.

The final image ended up being more about GM foods and how everyones hooked on manufactured chemicals disguised as food rather than actual food. Anyways, who cares about all that, look what i made guys!

I like the kids in the picture but thats about it. Still learned a lot doing this.

Grey Hair

Here are some sketches for a concept i was working on awhile ago about grey hair. Again, in this piece i was trying to convey the horrors of discovering grey hairs. It also felt like it would be more of an issue for women then men.

I ended up picking the third sketch and re working it a bit.

here's a quick color sketch i did of what i wanted it to look like.

I ended up changing the number of snakes and the flow of the hair, but i just wanted to establish all the pieces.

Painted as a gift in my spare time.

This started out as a Brush and Ink Piece i had up at the Public Exposure Zine Launch.

That piece now belongs to a friend of mine.

This piece also went out to a friend.

The original sketch and concept had a zombie head popping out of a graveyard with beer littering the landscape. The attempt was to create some sort of narrative in the image.

I got ambitious with this piece and scraped the small version i started painting and busted out a 15"x 20" piece of illustration board.

I ended up being pretty psyched with the results. Working larger gave me more room for experimentation. This actually went up on my wall after i finished it, till it went out in the mail.

I''ll admit, the typography was an afterthought, but i tried to make it work with composition. The strange thing was that once i blew up my sketch, i ended up having a HUGE amount of space under the head BEGGING me to add something else. it was either a zombified hand or type.

I ended up going with type in preparation for my thesis, i plan on experimenting with applying typography over my pieces in order to make them look like movie posters and comics.

Tomorrow, I'll upload my first thesis piece i worked on. It's actually a step back from this illustration, but i think it'll be fun to see how i've changed.

It's been awhile.

Heres an experimental thing i tried out today.

I kinda like the way it looks but it's so gritty

i don't know if it could work with anything other then this.

I feel cheap just layering textures,

but the results always look pretty fresh.

Goals:

- Develop a consistent process

- less monochromatic color schemes

- other stuff

noticed a job posting somewhere, looked like a fun job. It asked for two rough layouts, i gave it a shot, here here.

This one is somewhat tight as a painting, done from a photo, sooo... considerably easier since the light and everything was already flattened for me and all i had to do was paint it. Also it's B&W so even easier but you need to be able to get values before messing about with hue.

After i did this, i was looking at it and decided that there are way to many brush strokes. So i decided to do these which i really recommend to anyone.

One Brushstroke to describe form and it helps with your brush control.

Parts of these work really well, parts of it blow.

Here's a pretty good link to a guys blog who paints mainly in Guache. Here's a direct link to some video's he made while painting. Maybe it's just me but i like listening to people's theories on art and painting in general. Be sure to check out the rest of his stuff though.

My Critique on me:

Colors are a little too bright

Colors should/could be duller/greyer

these colors would only really be found on a flower

on he plus side it's got some decent value change a few eff up's here and there but decent overall and the warm/cool thing is working pretty well

If you're interested in painting at all you should take an hour out of your day and read through this thoroughly, it has some really great info.

I'm trying out a new style, a mixture of silhouette and line. Bob "the Bergmiester" says that its an easy way to create focal points in composition when you move from simple to complicated.

The drawing style isn't necessarily new, its just every time ive drawn like this for class i end up getting told it looks unfinished, eff it, i like how it looks, someone else out there will too.

i saw Jolie Holland live yesterday, it was a really good show, played all her best and i appreciate her not forcing her new stuff only. It was more like she sampled her new stuff and just played the good stuff, Littlest Birds, an AMAZING version of Alley Flowers, man i need a recording of that it was so good, and Goodbye California. I felt pretty inspired to make some of my own art so this is what i've been up to since...

I tried to take this to finish but its not turning out like i wanted to, need to experiment some more with illustrator and photoshop.

I had an extra week to work on this assignment. So i scrapped what i was doing earlier completely and started on a new piece. I was really expecting this to suck the whole way through up until i "finessed" the shit out of it in Photoshop. Not sure about the texture, i think it add's to the concept though...

Oh yeah the assignment was to illustrate an article that discussed the link of stress to aging. SOOOOO those breaks on his glasses = crow's feet, if you don't get that its a fail i suppose.

On The Road - Bloopers

Not the update i was talking about in the last post, but here are two variations in style and technique for the Jack Kerouac book cover.

mixed media: Lorim Ipsum photo transfer in the background, Matte Medium to seal it, Gauche painted over. I think this one looks the best, if i had more time i think it would look great. Check out that wicked Lazy eye...just noticed it.

Mixed media again: Newspaper, acrylic paint... i got so frustrated with this one i gave up. It looked to dated, fuck this one actually, embarrassed to even show it but whatever.

On The Road - Final

Here's he final image for the Book cover assignment. I'm not to happy with how it turned out but after drawing it a million times over and over, painting it twice, digitally fooling around with it for 9 hours straight. I'm sick of trying to figure this out.

I suppose the problem with it was i had no vision of what i wanted starting out so i didn't know where to go with it.

Next update should be better, none of this school work crap, i just have to get around to scanning...

the "soft" approach

In the book Creative illustration, Andrew Loomis talks about an approach to painting called the soft technique. The technique involves large areas of color(or tone in my case) put down immediately but without hard defining edges. The edges should be softened upon application or right away. The technique is supposed to help your work look more loose and less rigid. Ideal for the technical i suppose. Here's a quick sketch i made from my head using the approach.

there are some obvious her edges in her hair which were cleaner but i wanted more contrast. Paraphrasing Loomis, ideally, the combination of hard and soft edges is the pop the old masters lacked, who went for soft soft soft. Personally I prefer the soft Edges of Sargent.

EDIT: come to think of it, this is ALL hard edges,need to work on that...

So every since ive started sketching on a regular basis i would jsut draw on a page to fill it up and improve without worrying about how cluttered my book got. I was the only one looking at it anyways. I'm starting to realize that composition and visual hierarchy in my illustrations suck, so to remedy this, I'm gonna start organizing my sketches, not to much though, just less clutter (like the one above) and more organization. I want every page to look like a finished piece.

Heads and hands, been working on the hands lately, Trying to make them look less flimsy and put them in more complicated positions. Also drawing the head in perspective, could help me make illustrations more dynamic, but could be a waste of time too.
